Trustees Approve Grants, Personnel Matters

The Board of Trustees at Atlantic Cape Community College met Feb. 24 at the college’s Mays Landing Campus to approve personnel matters, contracts and purchases.

In Personnel Matters, the Board:

–Appointed Janice DeCicco Fipp of Northfield, director, National Emergency Grant, effective Feb. 25

–Appointed Kenneth Marchione of Absecon, technician, information technology services, effective Feb. 25.

–Appointed Michele Rehill of Brigantine, temporary office assistant, office of the president, Board of Trustees, resource development, community and alumni outreach, effective Feb. 25.

–Appointed April Wolff of Rio Grande, technician, information technology services, effective Feb. 25.

–Accepted the resignation of Margaret Hurley, temporary office assistant, resource development and president/board of trustee operations, retroactive to Feb. 16.

–Appointed Jean McAlister of Galloway, interim dean of resource development & president/Board of Trustee Operations and to the position of secretary to the Board of Trustees, effective March 2-June 30.

Additionally, the board accepted the resignation of Sean Fischer of Vineland, dean, resource development/president & Board of Trustees operations, effective March 13. Following nearly 10 years of service at Atlantic Cape, Fischer accepted a position at Rowan University.

“We’ve watched Sean grow in his career to the point where he sits at the left hand of the president. He brings wisdom, experience and knowledge of his generation,” Trustee Don Parker said

–Project management services for construction of capital projects, GO Bonds, Chapter 12 and R& R projects, Atlantic County Improvement Authority of Atlantic City, 4.9 percent of construction costs.

–Edmentum software, Minneapolis, $42,650.

In Grant Action, The Board:

–Approved accepting $123,853 subgrant funding from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, for the New Jersey Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge grant, over the term of Jan. 1, 2015, through Dec. 31, 2017. The grant will establish a Training Academy focused on child care, family child care, Head Start and preschool settings.

–Approved accepting a grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Skills4Jersey, for $54,400 over the term of Jan. 30, 2015, through Jan. 30, 2016. This grant provides funding to train employees in five gas industry organizations, including South Jersey Gas, NJ Natural Gas, JF Kiely, Precision Pipeline Solutions and Utiliquest.

–Approved accepting a grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Skills4 Jersey, of $108,800 over the term of Jan. 30, 2015, through Jan. 30, 2016. The grant provides funding to train health care workers at Shore Medical Center, Shore Physicians Group, AtlantiCare and AtlantiCare Physicians Group.

–Approved accepting an award of $72,587 and the return of $72,587 to the Department of Children and Families, Division on Women. The college previously applied for and obtained a $145,714 Displaced Homemaker Program Grant from the state in April 2014, however, the Department of Children and Families announced a reduction of the grant this month.

–Granted approval to apply for and accept $10,000 in subgrant funding from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, for the project “K-12 STEM Outreach in Atlantic County, N.J.” over the term of January 2015 to August 2016.

In Other Business, the Board:

–Approved the Jan. 31, 2015, financial statement.

–Approved closing the ACC Federal Perkins Account with the Bank of America.

–Presented a resolution to Dr. Herman Saatkamp, president of Stockton University, congratulating the institution’s faculty, staff and students on achieving university status.

“While we currently live in one of the most challenging times in the United States, it looks to be a remarkable future where we can work together rebuilding Atlantic City and the area,” Saatkamp said. “The solution is to make sure we work together. It’s an honor to be here.”

In the President’s Report:

–Fischer provided an update about the March 10 Taste of the Gala event at the Academy of Culinary Arts and the March 26 Atlantic Cape Community College Restaurant Gala at Bally’s Atlantic City. Tickets for both events are on sale, and information is available at http://www.atlantic.edu/gala.

Dr. Richard Perniciaro, vice president of planning, research, facilities and executive support, gave an update on the long-range capital projects planned at the college. Phase one begins this spring with renovations to buildings A, D and H to repurpose space and add Student Success Centers at the Worthington Atlantic City Campus and Cape May County Campus. The second phase of projects begins later this year with the construction of a Student Success Center at the Mays Landing Campus and renovation of the cafeteria.

Dr. Peter L. Mora, president, Maria Torres, chairperson, and Maria Mento, treasurer, discussed the Association of Community College Trustees National Legislative Summit they attended this month. Torres sits on the nominating committee for the group. The summit focused on President Obama’s recent proposal of Federal Support for Community College Tuition, Pell grants, Perkins Vocational Education Basic State Grants and dual enrollment programs.
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, at the Charles D. Worthington Atlantic City Campus, 1535 Bacharach Blvd. All are invited to attend.
