Thank you to our membership for participating in our wonderful Wednesday Workshops in April. Your continued participation in our events, activities for students and conferences add value programming. Everyone learned a lot and had a great time having dinner with their colleagues. Sandi Greco, specifically, would like to extend thanks to Caesar Niglio, Heather Peterson and Cheryl Garwood for their help putting the workshops together and the tedious behind-the-scenes work of set-up and break-down.

Perks, Perks!Part of the awesomeness of working here, my friends, is that we get tuition reimbursement for learning cool new things that coincidentally fulfill our graduation requirements. If this is you, please remember to submit your grades to Wendy Gray as soon as they arrive! Hopefully that means you will get to spend that money on say….more classes.

Don’t forget that children, spouses and you, of course, are all eligible to take courses here! That includes credit and noncredit courses.

Another perk is that you work with me, and I am awesome… But enough about me! Please nominate a fellow union member that you know goes above and beyond their call of duty to make life, services and everything just that tiny bit better, and explain how. I will honor them with a mention and photo about their awesomeness in the next CommuniCator and surprise them. Come on, you know someone!

Teacher Appreciation Day, OH MY! Nothing screams appreciation like a loud and boisterous day at a theme park! All teachers will receive a complimentary all-day wristband allowing access to Raging Waters Waterpark, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, June 8, and three amusement piers (Mariner’s Landing and Surfside Pier will be open 12:30-10 p.m., Adventure Pier 2-10 p.m.) Bring a friend and family for only $35 per person. You can collect your free Teacher Wristband and purchase Friends & Family Passes the day of the event at Mariner’s Landing Pier at Schellenger Avenue, Wildwood, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Bring a current proof of employment as a teacher (Photo ID, current pay stub, etc.) RSVP at moreyspiers.com/tad by June 4 or call 609-729-3700, ext. 1195, or email schoolprograms@moreyspiers.com.

Save Money! This bears repeating…tell your colleagues before doing home upgrades, before buying that new car and before ordering that pool you’ve been promising your family, and definitely before booking your day trips, destination vacations, Broadway or other shows, and other family or solo adventures to call 866-273-5825 and save money. New Jersey Education Association Entertainment Discounts for Employees (code NJEA) can save you up to 40 percent on most of your summer plans. For the flyer and more information, please log in to the member section of njea.org.

Mark Your Calendar! Batter up my friends…May 16-18 is the tail end of our week at the South Jersey Field of Dreams. There’s still time to soak up the sun, eat hot dogs and slurp soda at the baseball field. It is a great event to get you moving. Family and friends are encouraged to come and cheer you and the kids on in the stands. You can still sign up online. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1UeLqW820EKqPFK6p3Yfe9P3ATzS9v3r_yaO7r-waSSk/edit

Let’s extend our welcome to new union members Ramona Smith, student support services, and Edwin Nieves, facilities. Please make sure to stop by and visit or wave hello and introduce yourselves.

Did you know? In an article recently published by The New York Times, the “Cadillac Tax” is part of the Affordable Care Act and public employees will be subject to this tax, even though workers often accept smaller wage increases in order to retain benefits. This tax will be placed on plans that cost more than $10,200 annually for individual plans and $27,500 for family plans. The tax is 40 percent of costs in excess of the limit. Did you know that this law may affect you? This was discussed in an interactive forum on one of the Workshop Wednesdays that your union representatives scheduled during April. This and many other important topics, changes, benefits were discussed and your questions were answered. Plus, dinner was provided. If you missed them, please reach out to your union leadership.

Look at That! The ACCCEA was busy celebrating Earth Day April 22 with the students. The event is always a hit and PRIDE was there to join in the fun. The students totally loved the strawberry bundle that opened up into a cute-as-a-button bag with the earth day buttons. Kudos to Heather Peterson who put those bags together in record time. Thank you to the membership that participated and supported our PRIDE efforts at all campuses.ACCCEA Earth Day CMCC Earth Day

Opportunities Abound! Members participated in the NJEA Higher Education Conference in Princeton. Members were excited to join in the many learning opportunities through the sessions offered. The keynote speaker, Benjamin Ginsberg, author of The Fall of the Faculty, was exceptional and engaging. An opportunity to meet the author and get an autographed book immediately followed dinner. There was a lot of opportunity to engage with other members from the state’s many community colleges. We were proud to attend workshops that were facilitated by our union leaders, Sandi Greco “PRIDE in Public Education” and Marcia Kleinz “Associations in Generational Transitions.” Both sessions were well attended and interactive. As a model of unity, Atlantic Cape ACCCEA members are among the groups that are really leading the way in new ways to engage our members and engage in our respective college communities. We should all be very proud and kudos to the leadership for guiding us along this path.
